VMware Announces Acquisition of CloudHealth Technologies

LAS VEGAS, Aug. 27, 2018 — As companies move their operations to the cloud, they often find that using a single cloud provider is insufficient for their needs. Different public clouds have different capabilities and features, and do certain things better or worse than their competitors. In addition, for backup and disaster recovery purposes, it’s often wise to have data stored in more than one public cloud. Keeping your eggs in more than one basket has always been a good idea, and that’s why organizations are increasingly finding that it’s a best practice to utilize a multi-cloud strategy.
As VMware increasingly builds out its cloud efforts, it’s seen the need to offer services to this growing multi-cloud world. At the VMworld 2018 keynote presentation Monday, VMware CEO Pat Gelsinger announced the acquisition of CloudHealth Technologies, a company that specializes in the management of multi-cloud environments in areas like cost, usage, security, and performance.
CloudHealth provides a single management interface across Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud Platform (GCP). Using multiple public clouds introduces much more complexity into operations, and CloudHealth Technologies simplifies that environment.
“Multi-cloud usage while beneficial to business creates a unique set of operational problems,” said Raghu Raghuram, chief operating officer, products and cloud services, VMware, in a press release. “With the addition of CloudHealth Technologies we are delivering a consistent and actionable view into cost and resource management, security and performance for applications across multiple clouds.”
CloudHealth Technologies has more than 3,000 customers, including a number of industry heavy-hitters like Pinterest, Yelp, Dow Jones, Zendesk, Skyscanner and SHI.
This is a very solid move for VMware. Its cloud automation and operations portfolio continues to expand, and it recognizes that there are positives and negatives with all public cloud platforms. Since organizations are maturing beyond picking just one cloud provider and sticking with it, VMware needs to keep pace and broaden its ability to manage this growing environment. Although multi-cloud may not be the standard yet, it’s surely moving in that direction, and VMware is smart to get out ahead of the curve.
